I spent 26 years in sales and learned that even as a high performer, I wasn't in control of my fate. Targets were often unreasonable. Comp plans rarely made sense. Territory “realignments” kept changing the rules — usually to reduce footprint and compensation. And too many decisions came from an ivory tower that was out of touch with the marketplace.
